Trends will shape e-commerce in 2026

If this year made one thing clear, it’s that many ideas that not long ago felt “future-looking” are already happening. And when that happens, it’s worth slowing down for a moment, looking at the bigger picture, and asking what’s coming next.

That’s why I want to share three trends that became very visible this year and that I’m convinced will fully define e-commerce in 2026.

1. E-commerce + Artificial Intelligence (agentic commerce)

Let’s start with the most obvious one.

For a long time, buying through artificial intelligence felt like a distant idea. Today, it’s not. Purchasing through AI tools is already a reality.

What we now call agentic commerce is about people discovering, comparing, and even completing purchases directly inside conversations with AI. And this isn’t a niche vision. Platforms across the ecosystem are moving in this direction.

It’s not just Shopify. AI companies themselves are defining protocols and paths to integrate commerce into these new conversational experiences. In 2026, many purchase decisions won’t start on a store — they’ll start in a conversation.

And that changes everything.

2. SEO is still alive, but it plays a different role

The second trend is SEO. Yes, SEO.

It never stopped being important, but the game has changed. Before, the goal was clear: rank on Google. Today, the goal is to become the answer.

When someone asks a question in ChatGPT or another AI tool, that question triggers searches, cross-checks, and validations across multiple sources. If your store doesn’t explain clearly what it sells, how it works, and who it’s for, AI simply won’t consider it.

SEO today is less about keywords and more about clarity, context, structure, and real answers to real questions.

And we’re only at the beginning of this shift.

3. Payment gateways will take center stage

This third trend often surprises people, but to me it’s very clear: payment gateways will be major protagonists in 2026.

We already saw strong signals this year. In Argentina, for example, new payment providers were added to Shopify, expanding financing and payment options. That’s not accidental.

Globally, Stripe, which powers Shopify’s payments, is not only one of the largest players worldwide (second only to PayPal), but it has also fully embraced agentic commerce.

What does that mean?

That transactions will increasingly happen directly inside AI tools, without users ever leaving the conversation.

So… what’s your strategy for 2026?

The real question isn’t whether these trends will impact your business.

The real question is:

- Is your store ready to sell in a world where purchases start in AI?

- Does your content answer questions, not just searches?

- Is your payment experience prepared for what’s coming?

2026 is here and the brands that start adapting now will have a clear advantage.
