Sidekick Can Now Understand Your Apps: What Shopify’s New App Extensions Mean for Agencies

Artificial intelligence inside Shopify is moving beyond answering questions about the platform itself. With Shopify Editions Spring '26, Sidekick is becoming an interface through which merchants can interact not only with Shopify, but also with the third party applications they use to run their businesses. Sidekick App Extensions allow developers to expose app data and actions directly to Shopify's AI assistant, creating a much deeper connection between Sidekick and the broader app ecosystem.

For agencies that develop Shopify apps or build custom solutions for merchants, this is an important shift. Until now, merchants typically needed to open an app, understand its interface, locate the relevant feature, and perform the task themselves. Sidekick App Extensions introduce another model: the merchant can describe what they need in natural language, and Sidekick can identify the appropriate app, retrieve relevant information, or guide the merchant directly to the action required. The app is no longer simply installed inside Shopify. Its capabilities can become part of the conversational layer through which merchants operate their store.

From app interfaces to conversational workflows

The most significant change is not that Sidekick can launch an app. Shopify integrations have been connecting merchants with external functionality for years. What is different is that Sidekick can now understand what compatible apps can do and use their capabilities in response to a merchant's request.

Shopify currently supports two fundamental types of Sidekick App Extensions.

• App data extensions give Sidekick access to relevant information stored by an application. A merchant could ask Sidekick to identify the best performing email subject lines, for example, and Sidekick could retrieve campaign information from a compatible marketing app and present the relevant results without forcing the merchant to manually search through that application's interface. Shopify says Sidekick can combine this app information with store context to provide a more useful response.

• App action extensions allow Sidekick to connect a merchant's request with a specific workflow inside an application. If a merchant wants to edit an email campaign, manage a loyalty program, or perform another supported action, Sidekick can direct them to the appropriate location with the relevant context already prepared. Importantly, the merchant remains in control and confirms changes rather than allowing Sidekick to modify critical information without review.

This distinction is important because Shopify is not simply adding another chatbot integration. It is building a framework in which applications can expose specific capabilities to an intelligent assistant while preserving permissions, context, and merchant control.

Why this matters for Shopify agencies

For agencies, Sidekick App Extensions introduce a new dimension to app development. Building a useful Shopify application will increasingly involve thinking not only about what merchants can accomplish through its interface, but also about what they should be able to accomplish through AI.

That changes several development decisions. Agencies will need to identify which app data is genuinely useful in conversational contexts, determine which workflows can be safely exposed as actions, and design those actions so Sidekick can understand when they are relevant. Shopify specifically recommends clear, precise descriptions because Sidekick uses extension metadata to determine which app or capability should respond to a merchant's request.

This creates an interesting new layer of UX. Agencies have traditionally designed experiences around screens, navigation, buttons, forms, and dashboards. Sidekick introduces an additional interface based on intent. Instead of asking where a merchant needs to click, developers increasingly need to consider what a merchant might ask.

The app ecosystem becomes part of the AI layer

Spring '26 also demonstrates that this is moving beyond experimentation. Shopify announced that any developer in its ecosystem can build Sidekick App Extensions, following an early access program that included major app partners. Shopify's launch ecosystem includes companies such as Klaviyo, Loop, Smile, Judge.me, Matrixify, Checkout Links, and others, showing how Sidekick can become a common interaction layer across very different merchant workflows.

For merchants, the potential benefit is reduced context switching. Instead of moving between multiple dashboards to retrieve information or initiate routine tasks, they can increasingly start with Sidekick and let Shopify determine which connected capability is relevant.

For agencies, this creates several potential areas of specialization:

• Auditing existing Shopify apps to identify workflows that could be exposed to Sidekick.

• Designing app data extensions that make valuable business information accessible through natural language.

• Building safe and focused app actions that simplify common merchant workflows.

• Reviewing extension descriptions and metadata so Sidekick can correctly understand when an application's capabilities should be used.

These services are particularly relevant for agencies that already develop public apps, private applications, or sophisticated integrations for Shopify merchants.

AI readiness is becoming part of app architecture

There is another important implication. AI compatibility is beginning to influence how Shopify applications should be architected.

Shopify's documentation emphasizes that tools should have specific descriptions, actions should remain focused, and merchants should confirm changes before data is written. Sidekick extensions also operate within Shopify's sandbox and use Shopify's authentication framework, giving developers a structured environment for exposing functionality without simply handing an AI system unrestricted access to an application.

This means agencies developing apps should begin considering AI readiness earlier in the product development process. The question is no longer simply whether an app has a good admin interface or integrates correctly with Shopify APIs. Developers must also ask whether its data and workflows are structured in a way that intelligent systems can reliably understand and use.

A new opportunity for agencies that build Shopify apps

Sidekick App Extensions represent a broader evolution in the relationship between Shopify, apps, and merchants. As Sidekick becomes more capable, the traditional boundaries between the Shopify Admin and individual applications begin to soften. Merchants can increasingly express what they want to accomplish and allow the platform to connect that intent with the appropriate tool.

For agencies, this creates an opportunity to rethink app development around a new principle: the best application may no longer be the one merchants interact with most frequently, but the one whose capabilities are most intelligently available whenever they are needed.

Agencies that begin developing this expertise now can help clients transform existing apps and custom workflows into experiences designed for Shopify's increasingly AI driven operating environment. If your team is evaluating how Sidekick App Extensions could fit into your current Shopify projects, or how an existing app could expose its data and workflows to Sidekick, now is the right time to start that conversation.
